As a starting point, choose a kettlebell that allows you to complete the technique without pain, without loss of control, and without your breathing breaking down prematurely. For beginners, the priority is to learn the trajectory, hand insertion, rack, fixation, and hinge pattern before chasing more kilos.
On a product page, you might see a single number, but in real training, several loads coexist: one for learning, another for accumulating volume, another for specific sets, and another, only for prepared athletes, to guide competition. The calculator separates these loads to prevent a single figure from becoming a rigid prescription.
Fitness weight versus kettlebell sport weight
General fitness
Weight is chosen for swings, goblet squats, presses, carries or circuits. Technique matters, but the goal usually alternates between strength, conditioning, and hypertrophy.
Kettlebell sport
Weight must be sustained for long sets with efficiency. Rack, breathing, grip and cadence weigh as much as maximum strength.
Competition
Competitive load is not decided solely by general level. It depends on rules, duration, modality, category, recent test, and ability to repeat technique under fatigue.

Training is not the same as competition
In training, the weight should allow for quality repetitions: a set can be useful even if it doesn't yet resemble an official test. In competition, the load only makes sense if the athlete can sustain it with rules, clear fixations, controlled rhythm, and a real rest and breathing strategy. That's why KPS can recommend 16 kg as a volume weight and, at the same time, reserve 18 or 20 kg for shorter, more specific sets.
The key difference is the cost of error. In a technical session, you can lower the weight, repeat a rack entry, or cut short. In a test, every poorly managed repetition consumes grip, breath, and clarity. The calculator separates these contexts so that buying a kettlebell is not confused with automatically validating a competition load.
Body weight helps, but it doesn't dictate
Body weight guides the estimate when performance data is unavailable, but it has clear limits. Two people weighing 80 kg may need different loads if one has an efficient rack and the other loses fixation, if one can tolerate 8 minutes and the other only 90 seconds, or if one is returning from a break and the other is competing. KPS uses body category as a secondary signal: it should never replace a recent set, RPE, technique, cadence, or recovery.
Factors that truly determine weight
- Safety. Joint pain, warning signs, loss of control, or recent injury block a numerical recommendation.
- Actual performance. Current weight per kettlebell, sustainable duration, RPM, RPE, and cadence drop better describe your level than a generic chart.
- Discipline. Long Cycle accumulates fatigue in clean and jerk; Snatch demands grip and skin; Jerk depends on rack and fixation; Pentathlon penalizes choosing based on the strongest exercise.
- Technique. Breathable rack, stable fixation, efficient clean, controlled descent, and tolerant grip allow progress without making weight a compensation.
- Recovery. Increasing weight without enough sleep, recovery, or volume tolerance usually reduces quality before improving performance.

How to decide between one and two kettlebells
One kettlebell is usually the best option when the athlete is still learning trajectory, hand insertion, rack, fixation, or breathing. It also allows for accumulating unilateral work and detecting asymmetries without the total load forcing compensation. Two kettlebells make sense when the rack is breathable, the fixation is clear, and the goal requires specificity in Long Cycle, Jerk, or denser strength blocks.
The decision is not rigidly "one kettlebell for beginners and two for advanced." An intermediate athlete can use one kettlebell for heavy Snatch and two lighter kettlebells for technical Long Cycle. The calculator avoids an automatic double penalty: if you declare 2 x 16 kg, it understands that 16 kg is already the weight per unit.

Technical weight

How to interpret different results
If the technical weight is much lower than the specific weight, the system is separating learning and performance: you may have the strength to move a heavier load, but need a lower load to repeat clean entries, clear fixations, or stable breathing. If the volume weight matches the recommendation, the priority is to accumulate minutes before increasing.
If a competitive load appears, it does not mean it is the definitive competition load. It means that the data allows it to be tested as a guide. If it does not appear, the calculator is not punishing the athlete: it is saying that tests, duration, technique, or context are missing to convert a load into a responsible competitive goal.
When the result is yellow, the recommended figure is still useful, but should be read as a temporary upper limit. The priority then becomes stabilizing the variable that reduced confidence: high RPE, RPM drop, poor recovery, tight rack, grip, or final technique.
How to progress in weight and when not to increase it
The most responsible progression modifies one variable at a time: more time, more RPM, more density, or more weight. Increasing everything at once prevents knowing what adaptation produced the result.

When the intermediate weight doesn't have its own kettlebell
For intermediate jumps like 14, 18, 22, 26, or 30 kg, Kettleland's commercial recommendation is to use the next lower kettlebell and add magnetic weights for kettlebells. This respects fine progression without linking one weight to another product as if they were equivalent.
Example: if KPS recommends 18 kg, the practical solution is a 16 kg kettlebell plus 2 kg magnets. If it recommends 14 kg, the solution is 12 kg plus 2 kg magnets. For two kettlebells, the logic remains per unit: 2 x 18 kg implies two 16 kg kettlebells and equivalent magnetic load on each.
This rule is especially useful in transition blocks. It allows validating an intermediate load during short sets before converting it into a volume weight. If the athlete loses fixation, grip, or pacing with the added weight, the interpretation is not "I failed the weight"; it means that it is still advisable to consolidate the lower kettlebell.

How to interpret RPE, RPM, and duration
RPE
RPE 6-8 usually allows for useful work without turning every set into a max test. RPE 9-10 reduces the progression margin and increases the need for caution.
RPM
RPM describes sustainable cadence. A drop of more than 2 RPM usually indicates that it is advisable to adjust weight, pacing, or duration.
Duration
A load held for 90 seconds does not provide the same information as a load held for 8 minutes. The calculator uses duration as a sign of readiness.

Beginner
If you don't know your load, train 1-2 days, and are still learning rack or hinge, the priority will be a technical load and short sessions.
Intermediate
If you can sustain 12 or 16 kg for 6 minutes with RPE 7, you can consolidate volume before seeking a higher load.
Long Cycle
An athlete with 2 x 16 kg and a breathable rack does not receive a second reduction for using two kettlebells: 16 kg is already weight per unit.
Snatch

Common errors and calculator limitations
Choosing based on ego
A weight that can be lifted once may be useless for learning cadence, fixation, or breathing.
Ignoring pain
A light load does not make a symptom safe. If there is joint pain or alarm symptoms, the responsible response is to stop and assess.
Confusing total and unit
2 x 20 kg does not mean 20 kg total. It means two 20 kg kettlebells, one in each hand.
